Kaleidoscope of pain.

SPRINGFIELD – Landscaper Christopher W. Pike remembers a kaleidoscope of pain, confusion and horror on Monday morning.

“It was like a bomb went off. It was horrible,” he remembers of the accident on Wilbraham Road which left his boss, David Deveno, and Deveno’s 11-year-old son hospitalized with serious injuries.

Other residents thought the crash sounded like a bomb going off.

“There was black smoke everywhere and a really strong smell of gasoline,” said Leo Lovito, 30. “It’s very lucky it didn’t hit the school.”

Another witness, the upstairs tenant of the home that was hit, said it sounded like a bomb went off when the vehicle slammed into the house just below where he was lying in bed.

“It pretty much knocked me right out of bed, right onto my feet,” Joe Santbergen said.

Searchers continued to comb through the debris last night looking for people who may have been on site at the time of the explosion, said D’Aoust.

“It was quite the explosion. It felt like a bomb went off,” said Sherri Tkach, who lives 10 homes away.

Another neighbour reported hearing a huge bang that felt like “a meteor hit the ground,” said Anil Bharrat, who lives five doors down from the blast. “It was a really big boom.”

Abdalla said trees in the area were ripped up by their roots and some trees had the tops torn off.
